Choose Semrush or Ahrefs for competitive search intelligence. Build around either when the expensive work is joining research to your own pages, revenue, owners, and releases. Recreating an interface is feasible; recreating a continuously collected competitive web dataset is a different business.
The useful comparison starts with a specific decision: which pages deserve attention this week, what evidence supports the change, and who will ship it? A competitor ranking report, a first-party traffic report, and an engineering backlog answer different parts of that question.
Compare the research and operating model
Vendor capabilities below were checked against official documentation on September 26, 2026. The custom column describes Looski's proposed scope, not an existing product or a claim that vendors cannot be configured to do similar work.
| Criterion | Semrush | Ahrefs | Build your own |
|---|---|---|---|
| Competitive evidence | SEO Toolkit combines keyword, competitor, backlink, and audit research. Toolkit | Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, and related research are sold with dataset and export allowances. Plans | License outside data; join it to first-party results. |
| Entry monitoring scope | SEO Toolkit Pro lists five websites and 500 tracked keywords. Limits | Lite lists five unverified projects and 750 tracked keywords; verified projects have a different allowance. Limits | Define monitored pages and queries explicitly; data collection remains a cost. |
| Technical crawling | Pro lists 100,000 pages per month. Limits | Lite lists 100,000 monthly crawl credits and a separate per-project maximum. Limits | Retain a crawler or own discovery, rendering, scheduling, and storage. |
| Historical investigation | Historical data is listed from Guru in the SEO Toolkit. Plans | History windows vary by tier. Plans | Preserve licensed observations and your change history from inception. |
| API access | Standard API access and API units have separate commercial requirements. API | Direct API row limits and integration units vary by plan. API allowances | Purchase the entitlement needed for scheduled imports; do not automate around it. |
| Interactive research usage | Report and result limits depend on toolkit/tier. Limits | Current Standard and higher plans have unlimited fair usage; Lite and older plans can remain credit-based. Usage guide | Own interface usage; upstream queries still consume allowances. |
| Prioritizing commercial pages | Test the reporting and export workflow against your business taxonomy. | Test the same task and required export dimensions. | Attach service, margin, owner, and implementation effort to canonical URLs. |
| Connecting findings to releases | Evaluate integrations and the team's handoff process. | Evaluate integrations and the team's handoff process. | Link a finding to a ticket, deployed change, and scheduled review. |
| Data interpretation | Treat third-party estimates as evidence with a collection scope. | Apply the same scrutiny to coverage and estimates. | Store origin, observation time, and uncertainty beside every metric. |
| Best custom complement | An action queue fed by the research toolkit. | An action queue fed by the research toolkit. | A portable page inventory and decision history independent of one research UI. |
What the prices actually compare
For the standalone SEO Toolkit, Semrush documents Pro at US$139.95/month, Guru at US$249.95/month, and Business at US$499.95/month. Ahrefs localizes its pricing; obtain the Lite, Standard, or Advanced quote in your checkout currency and selected billing term. The Semrush amounts are public monthly list-price snapshots checked September 26, 2026, not quotations including taxes, additional users, usage, or add-ons. Semrush Toolkit pricing, Ahrefs pricing.
Semrush also documents bundled subscriptions combining SEO and AI visibility. A bundle and a standalone toolkit are different baskets; write the actual SKU into the procurement sheet. Likewise, do not apply an old Ahrefs credit complaint to every current plan. Semrush subscriptions, Ahrefs usage rules.
| Budget or migration item | What to measure | What changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Research subscription | Required markets, history, users, report rows, and keywords | A lower tier is irrelevant if a required investigation exceeds its limits. |
| Data for a custom dashboard | Allowed API endpoints, units, caching, and storage rights | Buying a UI subscription does not automatically fund unlimited data extraction. |
| Repeated reporting | Time joining URLs, removing duplicates, and assigning owners | Persistent manual joins can justify a narrow integration. |
| Migration | URL normalization, project settings, saved lists, report definitions | Export the meaning of the report, not only its last CSV. |
| Custom operations | Failed imports, quota handling, schema changes, and support | Retain the subscription in the estimate until it is actually retired. |
| Pilot outcome | Time from finding to accepted engineering work | Faster reports without more resolved issues may not justify a build. |
Buy the evidence, own the decisions
Our recommendation is to trial both products using the same market, query set, and real competitor pages. Include branded and non-branded queries, a small local competitor, and an established national site. Ask the researcher to explain where each recommendation came from. A larger total count is not automatically better coverage for the decisions your team makes.
Keep the successful research platform when analysts need to explore unfamiliar domains every day. They benefit from being able to change questions without waiting for a developer. A custom dashboard with five predefined reports should not be sold as equivalent to an open-ended research environment.
Build a page register when the bottleneck begins after the research. Each record should hold the canonical URL, page purpose, target audience, owner, first-party performance, licensed observations, open issues, and completed changes. Separate facts from hypotheses: “organic inquiries declined after this deployment” is an observation; “this deployment caused the decline” requires additional evidence.
The first useful screen is a weekly decision queue, not a wall of charts. Show why the page is there, what change is proposed, who can approve it, and what evidence would count against the proposal. Retain rejected recommendations so the team does not rediscover the same exception every month.
Prove the integration on a small portfolio
Choose a group of pages covering different templates and business priorities. Reconstruct several known changes: a redirect, a rewritten service page, an internal-link improvement, and a seasonal demand shift. Check that the system preserves the original observation date rather than making old data appear fresh after an import.
Deliberately expire a credential, exhaust a test quota, and change a URL. An incomplete import must be visible; it must not silently make missing values look like zero traffic or zero backlinks. Keep a raw import reference so an analyst can investigate discrepancies without guessing which transformation ran.
Evaluate whether owners accept the resulting tickets, whether duplicate findings collapse into one action, and how much preparation disappears from the weekly meeting. Search performance can be reviewed later, but a before-and-after graph is not a controlled experiment. Seasonality, competition, and search changes can move the outcome independently.
Choose the vendor that supplies useful research for your market. Extend it when handoffs are the problem. Build the operating layer when a reusable connection between evidence and action is the asset you want to own.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI replace Semrush or Ahrefs data?
AI can help interpret supplied evidence and draft actions. It does not create a measured backlink index or reliable search-volume dataset merely by generating an answer. Keep provenance attached to every metric.
What would a first custom SEO operations dashboard include?
Create a page inventory with canonical URLs, content owners, business purpose, observed search performance, and open changes. Ingest authorized first-party exports and licensed vendor data where available. Link an issue to a proposed fix, a deployment date, and a later review. Keep raw observations distinct from inferred explanations.
How should we compare the cost of Semrush, Ahrefs, and a custom build?
Separate data acquisition from workflow software. A custom dashboard may reduce manual reporting while leaving a vendor data subscription in place; include both in the total. Compare the same scope and planning horizon, including implementation, retained services, maintenance, and support. A lower subscription bill alone does not establish a lower total cost.
